“Fragments of Memory”
Painting # SM-049

This painting explores human connection, shared experiences, and the way relationships become intertwined with memory. Two prominent figures occupy the centre of the composition, facing one another as though engaged in a quiet exchange. Their proximity creates a sense of connection, yet their fragmented geometric forms suggest that each carries a separate inner world.

The figures are constructed from angular planes, bold colours, and an intricate vocabulary of patterns—circles, waves, dots, zigzags, stripes, and organic motifs. These patterns become more than decorative elements; they represent the layers of thoughts, experiences, and memories that shape individual identity. Each figure becomes a collection of visual fragments, much like a person is formed by many moments accumulated over time.

Surrounding them are smaller human and animal silhouettes, trees, architectural suggestions, and abstract forms. These elements create the feeling of a shared environment populated by memories. Some figures appear to interact, while others seem to exist independently, suggesting the many relationships and encounters that pass through our lives.

The contrasting palette of warm oranges, yellows, earthy browns, cool blues, purples, and strong blacks and whites gives the work a vibrant but contemplative character. The repeated patterns create movement across the surface, while the large geometric figures provide stability and focus.

There is also an intentional tension between order and fragmentation. The carefully repeated patterns suggest structure, while the irregular shapes and overlapping forms suggest the unpredictability of life and memory.

At its heart, the painting is about the spaces between people—the conversations, encounters, memories, and emotions that connect us without ever completely defining us. The two central figures can be seen as individuals, companions, or even two fragments of the same memory.
